When the owners of this 1865 Victorian in Goshen, Alabama decided to move the home out to the country, they didn’t realize that replacing the 150 year old wood porch planks would be such a disaster. The lumberyard suggested kiln-dried tongue and groove pine, stating “It’s been used for 150 years” as the main reason to install it. Well, wood porch planks of the past were much different than those being milled today. Today’s wood is significantly less dense which means it will rot at an astounding rate, especially in a hot humid climate like in Alabama. After just 3 years, the porch showed significant degradation, and in 5 years, even with careful care and maintenance, the porch ad become a serious safety hazard.
